Valor Christian HS, High School Male Athlete of the Year

It’s not every day that Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh hops on a plane destined for Colorado. Then again, it’s not every day that Harbaugh has a prized recruit playing in the Class 5A championship game. Harbaugh’s attendance at the 2016 state final was noteworthy.

What was common on that day at Mile High Stadium, how- ever, was the presence of Valor Christian quarterback Dylan McCaffrey. That was the norm while he was a prep.

While it was Harbaugh’s first time at a state final in Colorado, it was McCaffrey’s fourth appearance in one. Valor’s 30-14 victory over rival Pomona marked the third time he walked off the field a champion. In four state title games, three as Valor’s starting quarterback, McCaffrey was an impressive 44-of-76 for 577 yards — five touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Valor’s signal caller is arguably the best quarterback to ever come out of Colorado. Career stats for the 6-foot-5, 208-pound, Michigan-bound McCaffrey were 578-of-906 for 8,023 yards passing with 80 touchdowns passing and 36 rushing. As a starter, he led the Eagles to a 33-8 overall record, and 14-1 in the state playoffs. In his junior and senior seasons combined, he threw for 5,596 yards and 58 touchdowns with only nine interceptions.

Throw in his 3.8 grade point average and it’s easy to see why Harbaugh decided to head west to see McCaffrey’s last game, and why he was an easy choice for the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame 2016 Male High School Athlete of the Year.
